"I’ll argue that what might be the city’s most famous sandwich shouldn’t cost more than a full-day admission to MoMA."
Clearly MoMA execs are reading this (bestselling) newsletter: the museum just announced this morning that admission will go up to $30 next month, so the Katz's pastrami will once again be "affordable" per that metric lol
Katz's pastrami is a tourist sandwich, or for when you want to feel like one. They can charge whatever they want, because you pay for the ambiance. You don't need the ambiance? Then you don't need the sandwich.
Noted Gentrifier and Blowhard Jeremiah Moss once complained that the tourists were crowding his favorite deli: Katz's. That's when I knew he was a vapid piece of crap. No New Yorker's favorite deli is Katz's.
Excellent newsletter this week, Ryan! Regarding Katz's, I managed 30 years in Manhattan without going because it was too much a thing, too crowded, too without comfort. Always was a Second Avenue Deli guy (East Village days). I really appreciate the round-up of other writers' pieces and will check out most of them, though suspect your highlights will constitute better reading!

2nd Ave was my favorite for quite some time I like how they cut the meat so nice and thin! Need to try it again it’s been a while.
